How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht?

The answer depends on a number of factors, from the size and type of yacht to the destination, season, duration of the charter, and the experience you wish to create.

UNDERSTANDING THE CHARTER RATE

Luxury yachts are generally chartered on a weekly basis, although shorter charters may also be available depending on the yacht and destination.

As a general indication, charter rates can range from approximately €20,000 per week for smaller luxury yachts to several hundred thousand euros per week for large superyachts. The world’s most exclusive megayachts can command significantly higher rates.

The charter rate generally covers the use of the yacht, its professional crew, and standard onboard equipment and amenities.

WHAT IS THE APA?

In addition to the charter rate, most crewed yacht charters require an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA).

The APA is an advance payment used to cover the yacht’s operating expenses during the charter, which can include:

• Fuel

• Food and beverages

• Marina and berth fees

• Port and customs charges

• Water toys and additional services

The APA is commonly calculated as a percentage of the charter fee, often around 30 – 35%, depending on the yacht and itinerary.

At the end of the charter, the captain or management team provides an account of the expenses, with any remaining balance returned to the client.

WHAT INFLUENCES THE PRICE OF A YACHT CHARTER?

The Yacht

The size, age, design, amenities, crew, and reputation of a yacht all influence its charter rate. A 25-metre motor yacht and a 70-metre superyacht will naturally offer very different levels of space, service, and onboard facilities.

The Season

Charter rates vary throughout the year.

In the Mediterranean, July and August are typically the peak months, while May, June, September, and October can offer attractive alternatives with excellent cruising conditions.

The Destination

Your chosen cruising area can also affect the overall cost. Fuel consumption, marina fees, local regulations, and port charges vary between destinations.

The Experience

Private chefs, special events, exclusive restaurant reservations, additional water toys, helicopter transfers, wellness treatments, and other bespoke arrangements can all influence the final cost.

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU BUDGET?

Rather than choosing a yacht based solely on its weekly rate, it is important to consider the overall charter budget.

For example:

€ 30,000 – € 50,000 per week

A starting point for smaller luxury yachts and select Mediterranean charters.

€ 50,000 – € 150,000 per week

A broad selection of premium motor yachts and larger vessels.

€ 150,000 – € 300,000 + per week

Access to larger superyachts with extensive amenities and highly personalized service.

€ 300,000 + per week

Large superyachts and some of the world’s most exclusive charter vessels.
